China Raises Power Tariff by 0.02 Yuan
  2008-08-22

From:CRI

China is raising its power tariff for thermal generators by 0.02 yuan per kilowatt per hour from Wednesday.

Retail prices will be kept unchanged. Li Caihua, an official from the National Development and Reform Commission explains the price hike.

"This change is to ease the pressure on the thermal generators as a result of surging coal prices. This is also to maintain the normal order in the power field and guarantee the power supply."

The official adds the Commission will strengthen its supervision and inspection in order to keep the coal price stable.

Chins has become the second largest energy producer in the world. Earlier this week, energy officials say the country will change its energy dependence on coal into clean renewable energy.
